Pak-yu Alex Kwok

Hong Kong young pianist Pak-yu Alex KWOK is a passionate performer capturing both live and cloud audiences.

Majoring in piano, Alex received professional training in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of Prof. Gabriel Kwok, head of the keyboard department. He graduated in summer 2022, receiving a first-class honor in the Bachelor of Music degree. Currently, he is undertaking the Master of Music program in the academy. He is also the awardee of several scholarships, including the HSBC Hong Kong Scholarship, Grantham Scholarship, and the Concerto Prize Scholarship of the academy.

Alex has started his professional training in piano since 5 years old. In 2017, he qualified with Licentiate in Performance from Trinity College London. He has also received tutelage from various prestigious masters such as Leslie Howard, Eliso Virsaladze, Leonel Morales and Ronan O'Hora in masterclasses. Alex is a frequent winner of various competitions as well. He has got the championship in Professional Group-L as well as Best Interpretation of a Chopin Piece prize in the 2021 autumn edition of Chopin Avenue International Piano Competition. In the very same year, he also achieved second prize in the Young Artists Group in HKGNA International Music Competition.

A natural communicator in his art, Alex started professional engagements only in the recent years. In 2022 he was featured as a guest pianist in “The City”, an immersive concert featuring music by Beethoven, Arvo Pärt, and Shing Hei Kam, presented by art organization Yorozuya City. He was also invited as a performer in “2022 Invisible Music”, a concert featuring both Chinese and Western music performed with two visually impaired musicians, held by HKALPS.

In 2023, he gave a public recital at Musica del Cuore, and has participated at the Rachmaninoff Piano Week hosted by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, with his rendition on the complete Moment Musicaux Op. 16 captured live and broadcasted by RTHK 4's “Live On Four”. He also shared some personal experiences later on radio through “Arts News”. To date, his performances on YouTube has accumulated over 150k views.

Besides piano, Alex also plays erhu. In 2015 he earned from the Central Conservatory of Music a Grade 10 certification. He is now a guest erhu player in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Chinese Orchestra. He is also devoted in charity works, and has appeared in the Oxfam Music Marathon several times performing erhu.
