Program
Originated as a genre for amateurs and domestic practices, violin duos evolved with the technical knowledge and demands from composer-performers Sphor and Mayseder, creating some elaborated works with each player displaying every possibility of the instrument. On the other hand, Bartók explored the very same insturmentation in the simplest research, articulating emotional purity and genuine tones of the folk. Either way, violins aren't just "single-lined violins" as you have imagined, and a duo can be simultaneously best friends and rivals!
Programme:
Louis Sphor, Duo Concertante op.67 no.2, first movement
Joseph Mayseder, Duo for 2 violins in E major, op.32
Béla Bartók, selections from 44 Duos for 2 violins
