Macy YAU is a 15-year-old student studying in Diocesan Girls’ School (DGS). She joined Yip’s Children’s Choral & Performing Arts Centre at the age of four, and has been receiving violin training under Fu Teng since the age of five. Macy got her ABRSM Grade 8 Violin degree with excellent results at age of ten. She has been awarded the ATCL and LTCL Performance Diplomas in Violin from Trinity College London with high distinctions at the age of twelve and fourteen respectively.
Macy has won numerous prizes with Honours over the years in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festivals. In 2015, Macy was the first prize-winner with Honours of Violin Concerto age 19 or under. In the same year, she won the Championship of the String Ensemble (Junior) with her school string quartet. In 2012, she captured two championships in both the Violin Solo and Violin Concerto classes. She was the winner in Violin Concerto categories (age 12 and age 13 or under) in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Macy has also been actively participating in many music activities and community services. As a violin soloist, she has performed with Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to her passion for music, Macy also excels academically. She was awarded the Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Grants for Talented Students in 2010, and is a member of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and the Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Education Programme for the Gifted and Talented.
Apart from giving off solo performances, Macy also enjoys playing in orchestras. She has been a member of the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra since she was ten, was the Concertmistress of Orchestra B and the Principal second violin of Orchestra A during 2012 to 2014, and is currently a first violinist in Orchestra A. She has performed with renowned musicians, such as Chuanyun Li, Chen xi, Alan Chow and Alvin Chow, with the orchestra. In 2013 summer, she joined the Mahler Summer Workshop and the concert tour with the orchestra to Europe. In 2014 summer, she toured with the orchestra to perform in Koerner Hall, Benaroya Hall and Chan Shun Concert Hall in North America and Canada. This summer, she first joined the orchestra to Taiwan, performing in a joint concert with Kaohsiung Youth Symphony at the Cultural Center of Kaohsiung, then toured to Austria to perform and participate in master classes under Jimmy Chiang in Headquarters of Vienna Boys’ Choir.
Macy is currently the Concertmistress of Diocesan Girls’ School Symphony Orchestra and the Principal second violin of String Orchestra. She participated in Hong Kong Schools Music Festivals and Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows with both groups and won top prizes. In April this year, she toured with the school orchestras to Taipei and Tainan to have music exchange with local top schools and got compliments from various media.
