Camille Poon, violin

Camille Poon joined the Hong Kong Sinfonietta as a violinist in 2018. Previously, she was a principal player of the violin section in the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan. Having earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Poon furthered her studies at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University Bloomington with Professor Kevork Mardirossian and received her Master of Music in Violin Performance.

Started learning the violin at the age of six with renowned violinist Ms. Jue Yao, Camille Poon has been a recipient of numerous scholarships and won the Third Prize in the 14th Osaka International Music Competition as well as the Gold Award of the Hong Kong Bauhinia Cup Strings Competition 2012. She has performed as a soloist with various orchestras in Hong Kong and is also a frequent performer in master classes of world-renowned musicians including Kyung Sun Lee, Glenn Dicterow, Earl Carlyss, Lewis Kaplan, Alissa Margulis and Daniel Gaede. She attained the Fellowship of the Trinity Guildhall at the age of 15 as well as the Fellowship of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music a year after.

As the second violinist of the Cong Quartet, Camille worked closely with the Pacifica Quartet in the Quartet Seminar of the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University. She has played in the masterclasses and worked with the Shanghai Quartet, Pacifica Quartet, Arianna Quartet and members of Miami Quartet, Juilliard Quartet etc. As a chamber musician Camille has won prizes at the 1st Alice & Eleonore Schoenfeld International String Competition Chamber Division.

Camille is also an active orchestral musician. She had been the concertmasters of Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong, Chung Chi Orchestra of Chinese University of Hong Kong and was the principal second violin in Indiana University Concert Orchestra. She has also played in the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra during her studies in the US.

Praised by the Gramophone Magazine for ‘ impressive… innate musicality and technical mastery’, young Steinway Artist pianist Wai Yin Wong was the recipient of a number of international awards – among many of the awards she received since she was young, she was the youngest First Prize Winner of the Southern Highlands International Piano Competition in Australia, Second Prize Winner of the 17th Hilton Head International Piano Competition in USA, the youngest Gold Medal winner in the 7th International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz with five special prizes.

She has given recitals at the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Salle Cortot of Paris, Steinway Hall of New York, Carnegie Hall of New York, Poly Theatres of China etc. She was also invited for solo recitals at the Opening of the Newport International Festival in USA, the 39th and the 46th Hong Kong Arts Festivals, the Hong Kong City Hall Virtuosi Series etc.. Her footprints of solo concerts were also in Brisbane; Canberra; Washington D.C.; Chicago, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Egypt etc. Besides giving solo recitals, she is an active chamber music performer; she is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Yale Club of Hong Kong and has performed frequently with other members. 

Wai Yin completed the Artist Diploma program at the Yale School of Music. Before that, she completed her Bachelor of Music degree with First-class honors at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Master of Music Degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. Her teachers include: Gabriel Kwok; Hui Ling; Boris Slutsky and Boris Berman.

Wong was the recipient of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, Lady Fung Scholarship and the Asian Cultural Council Scholarship. She was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the Hong Kong Government in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the promotion of international arts and culture activities. In 2019, Wai Yin released her debut CD: Liszt’s Transcriptions from Operas by Auber and Verdi under the Naxos label.
