Anson WONG, piano
Seventeen-year-old Anson Wong was born in Hong Kong. He is now a high school student at Diocesan Boys’ School. He has been a junior music student at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2010. His major studies include piano, bassoon, composition and computer music & technology. His music journey began at Tom Lee Music Foundation since age of 4. He studied piano major at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Dr. Karl Lo and since 2016 with Prof. Gabriel Kwok.
He has won numerous prizes including the 1st prize at the prestigious Betty Drown Piano Concerto Competition of 67th Hong Kong School Music Festival at age 13 or under in 2014 and 2nd prize at Senior section in 2015, the 2nd prize of Gold Medal Piano Award of 68th Hong Kong School Music Festival in 2016, the 3rd prize of 79th Steinway & son International Youth Piano Competition in Hong Kong, the Silver prize of 17th Chopin International Piano Competition in Japan. He was featured and interviewed by Hong Kong’s classical radio station RTHK4 where he played traditional repertoire as well as improvisation. In 2015, he appeared as a special guest performer at the recital of world renowned pianist Yundi Li at Hong Kong coliseum where he received a masterclass coaching from the Maestro. In 2017, he received the Gold Prize Award of Senior High School group in the Ishikawa International Piano Competition held in Japan, with 2 additional special Jury prizes.
Besides piano major, he is studying bassoon at the Hong Kong Academy for performing Arts, and is an active orchestral player, including the Junior Symphony Orchestra of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Neowinds. In 2018, he won the 1st prize of Bassoon solo (Secondary school – Junior) of the Hong Kong School Music Festival. His exceptional performance of Electone was showcased in the 2010, 2014 & 2016 Asia Pacific Electone Festival in Taiwan and Malaysia, which in the 2016 season, he was awarded the Grand Prix winner of the Senior Section, championing in both improvisation and performance. In addition, he presented his original composition at the 2012 and 2013 Asia Pacific Junior Original Concert in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
He is currently also a student in the composition and computer music department of HKAPA, studying under Ms. Poly Ng. In 2017, he won the 1st prize of the 69th Hong Kong School Music Festival open class composition competition with the piece, the 5 Elements.
